A native of Chicago, now living in Atlanta, Ranena Olivier draws upon … well … everything and everything by her own account, for her inspiration in creating fashion in Second Life. From real life to her second one, nothing is without a creative air, whether it’s walking her dog around the neighbourhood, something glimpsed on a television or movie screen, a piece of jewellery or a pair of shoes, everything and everyone provide the virtual world fashion designer with a steady stimulus of ideas for her work. It’s such a life outlook that has, in all likelihood, lead her to her career in advertising as a graphic designer.

“I’ve worked in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator more years than I care to mention,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve always loved playing in both programs … even when not at work. I’ve built web sites for fun for about 6 years.”

Part of the appeal of designing fashion in SL is the ease. “I can create a garment a lot faster here in SL than I can tailoring it in real life,” says Olivier, who has been a seamstress since her tweenage years.

This Saturday, you will have an opportunity to see five of Olivier’s gown and dress designs inspired by art, nature, the summer season, sensual elegance, and the spirit of adventure before they hit shelves.

“I totally love making clothing here in SL. I feel a [sense] of freedom and release while working on a piece. I feel a [sense] of accomplishment when I create garment that others love to wear. It makes me happy when I make women feel beautiful in the clothing I design.”
